Program Description:

The most French city in North America, Québec is a ‘must see’ for any Francophile. This beautiful city is located along the banks of the Saint Lawrence River and is the capital of the Canadian province of Québec. Vieux Québec (Old Québec), the only fortified city on the continent north of Mexico whose walls are still intact, was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1985.

Whether enjoying fine dining along the rue St. Jean, shopping at the Marché Vieux Port or strolling along the ramparts, students will be immersed in one of the most vibrant francophone cultures in the world.

Overview

Participants will study both French as a living language which differs in accent and vocabulary according to the region and country in which it is spoken, and francophone culture with a special emphasis on the role Québec has played in its history and development. Candidates for this residential program will have completed at least one year of high school French and will be academically motivated and responsible.

Academics

Language and culture classes and workshops are taught by Abbey Road faculty; the curriculum is designed to provide a well-rounded learning experience and is presented using classroom instruction, field studies and practicum.

Housing

The students will be lodged in a centrally located residence. They will typically share a room with one or more of their peers.

Daily Schedule

Students will attend morning classes in French language and they will participate in cultural field studies in the afternoon. There will also be time for the social and recreational activities that make Québec such a pleasant place to live: movies, concerts, outdoor cafés, museums, shopping, etc.

Weekend Excursions

Abbey Road participants will spend their weekends exploring the region in all its splendor. Destinations may include Lévi , Cap Tourmente , Cap Rouge , Île d’Orléans, St.-Anne de Beaupré, Cartier-Brébeuf or Wendake Village, to name a few.
