Program Overview

Program Description:
Al-Mashriq is a unique Arabic language training center and study abroad program located in Amman, Jordan. Our mission is to provide effective, high quality instruction for students of Arabic who seek comprehensive communication skills, not just the ability to read and write Modern Standard Arabic. Our programs give students the tools they need to navigate everyday life in any Arabic-speaking country.

Our unique curriculum is a revolutionary course of study that fully integrates Levantine Arabic (spoken) with Modern Standard Arabic (written) in the very same classroom from Day 1. Based on Routledge's Arabiyyat Al-Naas series and the Cornell University Arabic curriculum, our program of study focuses on building oral communication and comprehension skills in the real, living language as it is used by native speakers every day.

大多数Arabic-as-a-foreign-language程序集中on Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) for all four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) and sometimes teach spoken Arabic as an afterthought. This traditional system leaves many students struggling to communicate verbally as they are not prepared to deal with the language in everyday settings. In an effort to solve this common problem and close the gap between Western classrooms and the real world, we teach students the living language as it is used by native speakers every day. Al-Mashriq courses introduce spoken Levantine Arabic (the Arabic used in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Palestine) and use it for ordinary conversation and discussion throughout the course and MSA for reading, writing and formal/scripted speech. The results are remarkable, and participants see notable progress in their fluency level after just a few weeks.
Setting Description:
The bustling capital of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, Amman has recently become one of the only safe and stable destinations for students of Arabic to travel and study abroad. This modern city has much to offer travelers, especially those who undertake study of the local dialect - the people are friendly, hospitable and excited to share their language and culture with interested foreigners. This modern city is centrally located and offers easy access to numerous tourist attractions both within and outside of Jordan such as the Dead Sea, Petra, Wadi Rum, Jerash, Jerusalem, the Red Sea, and more.
