Program Description:

The Associated Kyoto Program is a two-semester study abroad program at Doshisha University in Kyoto, Japan, sponsored by a consortium of thirteen American colleges and universities. The Program maintains high academic standards and dedication to a sound liberal education for which its sponsoring institutions are known. Almost 1500 students have participated in the Program since its inception in 1972.

The goal of AKP's language program is to assist students in improving their communicative competence in written and spoken modern Japanese. The language program is enriched by coordinating the students' classroom work with elective courses, visiting speakers, Doshisha student groups, and especially homestays, where the students apply their Japanese to everyday household situations and frequently have long discussions with homestay family members. AKP, which began in 1972, represents one of the oldest study abroad programs in Japan. Our goal has been to provide students with a rigorous academic program that helps them live and experience and know more about Japan and Japanese in one of Japan's oldest and most beautiful cities, Kyoto.

Setting Description:

Kyoto is acclaimed by Japanese and foreigners alike as one of the world's great cities, the embodiment in place and spirit of Japan's rich cultural heritage. It is also a thriving modern metropolis of over a million people, as concerned with its future as it is proud of its past. The AKP Center is located in a handsome nineteenth-century brick building on the main (Imadegawa) campus of Doshisha University in north-central Kyoto. One of Japan's finest private universities, Doshisha was established in 1875 by Niijima Jo (1843-1890).

Cost:

For students at AKP consortium institutions, the comprehensive fee is the same as tuition plus room and board at the home institution. For non-consortium students, the comprehensive fee is assessed on the prevailing rates of consortium schools.
