Program Overview

Program Description:
Calder Classics is designed for high school students who want further exposure to Latin and Art History. In a residential “salon” style environment, this small, select group of Latin students will be reading and discussing Latin literature every day. Together we will delve into some of the most influential ancient Roman authors including Livy, Vergil, Ovid and Petronius. We will then explore the piazzas and museums of Florence and nearby Tuscan towns, where we will study and visit artistic representations that complement our readings. In the evenings we will enjoy Italy’s many visual, culinary, leisure and cultural offerings.

Daily Latin classes expose high school students to Latin grammar and literature through readings; excerpts include the works of Vergil, Ovid, Petronius, Apuleius, and Livy. In an informal, round table setting, students read, translate and enjoy texts, paying careful attention to syntax, content and style. Visits to a variety of Italian works of art, monuments and historical sites compliment the themes and stories in the daily Latin readings. Places such as the Uffizi Galleries, the Duomo, the Accademia, the Boboli Gardens, the Pitti Palace, the Convent of San Marco, Fiesole and Siena are all on the agenda. DAILY SCHEDULE (sample) While the schedule will be flexible, the general plan is as follows: 8-9AM: Yoga/exercise or SAT II coaching (optional) 9-10AM: Group breakfast 10-12:30PM: Latin 12:30-2:30PM: Lunch and Break 2:30-5:00PM: Art and Culture Visits 5:00-10:00PM Dinner and Evening Activities

Students should have at least one (1) year of Latin reading experience and should be dedicated in their interest. For interested students, the program will cover materials you are likely to find on the Latin SAT II and AP tests (for example, we will be reading portions of The Aeneid). Upon request, Calder Classics provides a Letter of Recommendation, and an Achievement Certificate to be sent to the student’s Guidance Counselor, acknowledging completion of a rigorous program of study in Latin and Art History. Most importantly, students will increase their enjoyment of Latin by gaining a more thorough appreciation of the literature through artistic associations.
