Program Description:

The oceans harbor incredible biodiversity, provide food and other resources humans, and regulate climate. Yet, they are increasingly impacted by human activities. This 4-week course includes a two week trip to Belize to explore the incredible diversity of coral reefs. Students will study the ecology and conservation of fishes, corals, sponges, and reef ecosystems during a pre-departure online course.

Spend two weeks snorkeling off the coast of Belize, in the second largest barrier reef in the world. See the rich coral reef, sea grass, and the nearby mangrove ecosystems. Learn about these rich ecosystems by experiencing them through exploration and by carrying out a research project.

Learn the fundamentals of marine biology and spend time immersed in coral the reef ecosystem. Students are awarded 4 credits from the University of Wisconsin, Madison for their participation in the program.

Setting Description:

The program begins with two weeks of online coursework to offer flexible scheduling for students. Spend the next two weeks on the Southwater Caye research station within a large marine reserve in Belize.
