Program Description:

Spend your summer participating in meaningful, real-world environmental conservation and education projects while you earn academic credit! The Ceiba Foundation has teamed up with UW-Madison to offer a two-week summer course: Land Use, Water Quality and Human Health. Work with rural communities in Ecuador to study water quality issues and how they relate to land management and human health. This course is perfect for those interested in global health or for biological science majors interested in water quality issues. .

Service-learning provides students the opportunity to learn while engaging with local communities and lending a hand to solve real-world problems. The Water for Life course combine hands-on field activities and work in communities with lectures and readings to highlight main themes and supplement learning. Students will work with local people to monitor drinking water supplies, visit local health clinics to learn about water related illness, and assist in community education efforts. This program provides an experience that will broaden students' global awareness, social skills, cultural competence, and scientific research capabilities, while providing tangible service in the form of research mentoring and education in local communities.

Setting Description:

This two-week summer course takes place in coastal Ecuador. After receiving orientation in Quito, we descend the western flanks of the Andes, visiting a cloud forest reserve on the way. Students live together at the Lalo Loor biological station, a beautiful forest reserve one mile from the sea, that showcases Ecuador's astonishing biodiversity. The courses take place in and around the Lalo Loor reserve, and with several small communities along the scenic Pacific coast. Excursions to mangroves, lovely beaches, fishing villages and organic farms are built-in to the course.
