Program Overview

Program Description:
ELI works with several English-language media outlets based in Shanghai to create unique journalism internship opportunities. Writers can gain experience with a daily newspaper, weekly publications or monthly magazines. Interns shadow reporters and may even have the opportunity to be published.Some of the organizations accepting international interns may offer monthly stipends to offset the costs of living in Shanghai. To qualify for a position offering a stipend, interns must commit to at least 12 weeks with the program. The amount of the stipend varies, but it is usually enough to cover the cost of rent.

All placements are made on a completely individual basis according to the skills and needs of each intern.

Pre-departure Support: ELI's expert staff will be happy to assist you with planning your trip Airport Pickup: Participants are met when they arrive at the airport in Shanghaiand brought to their accommodation In-Country Orientation: Each program starts with a 2-3 day orientation to help participants get their feet on the ground and able to navigate the city. In-country Staff Support: ELI's coordinator in Shanghai has years of experience working with international interns. He is very resourceful and on call 24/7 in case of emergency. Accommodations: Participants have a choice of accommodation including private apartments, shared apartments, and host families. Interns can choose the accommodation that best suits their individual needs.
Setting Description:
Shanghai is currently listed as the largest proper city in the world. With a population of over 23 million people (as of 2010), the city is the commercial and financial hub of China. With a top-of-the-line hi-tech public transportation system and every manner of entertainment at your fingertips, Shanghai is a wonderful place to jump in and really see the massive changes that have hit this country so quickly. Skyscrapers abut temples, while quaint back streets wind hidden beside massive thoroughfares. With the rapid urban to rural migration and the growth of a middle class in China, cars and buses have quickly replaced bicycles and oxen creating a unique mash-up that feels somehow unique to Asia.
