Program Description:

The perfect introduction to Italian art, culture, history and language, this spring semester study abroad program in Florence is sure to please. It was during the Middle Ages and Renaissance Era that Florence became the cultural hub of Europe, where artists like Leonardo DaVinci and Michelangelo, architects like Brunelleschi, and writers like Dante flourished. The evidence of their achievements is still present throughout Florence in palaces, squares, churches, monuments, and museums. These days, Florence is an active commercial center for business, banking, fashion, and the production of leather goods. The innumerable artistic treasures and natural beauty of the Tuscan countryside attracts students from all over the world who come to Florence as their place for an unforgettable study abroad experience. This unique city will be yours to absorb, explore, taste, marvel, and enjoy for an entire semester!

Program Details

Host Institution: Centro Fiorenza

Participants are based at the Centro Fiorenza, founded in 1982 and located right in the center of Florence in a prestigious seventeenth century palace called Palazzo Guicciardini. The former palace overlooks Florence's beautiful Arno River and the famous Ponte Vecchio.The Italian language instruction (3 credits of beginning, intermediate or advanced Italian) that participants will receive from the Centro Fiorenza's staff is top notch. Classes typically meet four days a week, allowing students ample opportunity to travel throughout Italy and Europe on the weekends and during Spring Break.

Academic Host: CAPA International

We are happy to offer a wide selection of course options offered by our partner CAPA International.

Eligibility

Students must have completed at least 45 credits at the time of departure with a minimum 2.5 GPA
Students should not study abroad the last semester of senior year if they plan to graduate on time.

Students with less than 45 credits can be considered for acceptance to this program, but may be subject to additional requirements such as a mid-term progress report, a writing sample (from a college course), and/or an in-person interview. First year students will also be placed with a host family (please note the difference in cost for this option below).

Credits

Students must enroll in 15 undergraduate credits. All students will take an Italian Language course (3 or 6 credits) and the course offered by the Mason Academic Director (3 credits). The Academic Director's course for Spring 2018 is ANTH 398/INTS 399:Peoples and Cultures of Italy.

Students will then pick 2 or 3 3-credit course options offered through CAPA:CAPA Course Table

Housing

The base program cost includes double occupancy lodging in a shared student apartment in the historic city center of Florence.

Excursions

The CAPA Florence Center runs various excursions and events throughout the semester which are included in the cost of the program.

Additionally, Florence for Fun (and Italy for Fun), an independently run tourist company, works in close conjunction with Centro Fiorenza. Students can sign up for trips (at their own expense) to locations in Italy, or even trips to other parts of Europe! In the past, students have toured Rome, Chianti, the Carnival in Venice, the "Best of Tuscany," Verona, and Cinque Terre, to name a few of the most popular options in Italy.
