Program Overview

Program Description:

Spend your Spring semester on the banks of the Danube river in beautiful and historic Budapest, Hungary. Participants earn 15 credits from George Mason University over the semester while interning 3 days per week and taking classes two days per week. This program merges the academic, cultural and social experiences of a semester abroad in Europe with the practical experiential-learning of an internship. Students participating on this program can expect to return with a semester of European travel memories and a professional internship experience as an enhancement to their resumes before graduation. Participants live in shared apartments with other students in the program. Included is a transportation pass for the public transit system, to make travel in and around the city as easy as possible.

All students are guaranteed 15 total credits from GMU for the semester. After this program, you will earn 15 credits which consist of 9 credits for 3 courses and 6 credits for the internship. Course 1 is The Roma in Hungary and Europe: The intersection of social issues and the effects of prejudice (Students choose 1 of the following 3-credit courses: ANTH 398, GLOA 480, and CONF 399). Course 2 is Building rule of law, parliamentary democracy, markey economy, and a new nation state in Hungary (Students choose 1 of the following 3-credit courses: GOVT 398,GLOA 480. SOCI 395). Course 3 is Introduction to Gender Studies in Western Societies (Students choose 1 of the following 3-credit courses: WMST 390, SOCI 395, NCLC 399). *Courses subject to change based on departmental approvals. Internship credits will be: NCLC 490, GLOA 495, GOVT 480, ENGL 498, HIST 399, CONF 385, WMST 400, ANTH 495 or more, depending on student major/minor. You may be able to earn internship credits in your major. Please speak to CGE and your department.

Potential Internship Placements are: NIOK – Hungarian Nonprofit Information and Documentation Center (Strengthen civil society in Hungary – Supporting non-governmental institutions and NGOs.); Open Society Institute, Budapest (Acts as the administrative and operational headquarters for a number of Open Society initiatives.); Open Society Archive (Research center dedicated to the history and afterlife of communism and the cold war); Roma Education Fund (Established with the vision of expanding education opportunities for Roma communities in Central and Southeastern Europe.); European Roma Right Center (International Public interest law organization which monitors the situation of Roma in Europe and provides legal defense to victims of human rights violations.); Menedek – Hungarian Association for Migrants and Hungarian Helskini Committee (Monitoring, criticizing legislation and providing legal assistance.); Hungarian Civil Liberties Union

Cost:

$9,998. The Center for Global Education Program Fee includes 15 credits tuition, student housing in shared apartments with other program participants, internship placement in Budapest, health insurance, emergency evauation insurance, Budapest public transportation pass for the duration of the program, excursions and tours around Hungary, pre-departure orientation at GMU and CGE T-shirt.
