Program Overview

Program Description:

As the "birthplace of democracy," students can walk in the same footsteps of the world's greatest philosophers like Plato and Aristotle. With a recorded history of over 3,400 years, the history of Athens is almost incomparable to any other city in the world. While the remains of ancient Athens is still prevalent throughout the city today, the city is as young and vibrant as ever. Students will gain access to the city's countless museums, cafes and tavernas, local shops and farmers markets, not to mention the country's famous Greek islands.

Setting Description:
Athens is located in central Greece and lies on the central plain of Attica, also known as the Athens or Attica Basin. The basin is surrounded by 4 large mountains: Mount Aigaleo, Mount Parnitha, Mount Pentelicus, and Mount Hymettus. Athens is also built around a number of hills and rivers, including the Lycabettus hill and the Cephissus, Ilisos, and Eridanos rivers. As the capital city of Greece, Athens has a population of 3 million and is the most populous city in Greece. The city of Athens is also the capital of the Attica region. The term Athens can refer either to the municipality of Athens, to Greater Athens, or to the entire Athens Urban Area.
