Program Overview

Program Description:
The Rural Education Institute of Mexico is a non-profit organization with the mission of promoting education in rural communities in Mexico. We provide educational programs, scholarships, and learning tools such as libraries and computers. Our goal is to reduce the alarming dropout rate among rural Mexican children, to build life skills, and to foster a love of learning. To carry out our programs we are now recruiting Programming Interns for a semester-long international experience beginning in either September 2013 or January 2014. Interns will report to the Director of Programming and have the opportunity to plan activities and work with primary and middle school children in the rural communities surrounding San Miguel de Allende.

Responsibilities • Together with the Director of Programming and other interns, design and implement a series of activities in English, Computing, Sports, Art, Music and Theatre for elementary school students (ages 8-12) that promote leadership, teamwork, communication, creativity, and other important life and learning skills. • Together with the Director of Programming and other interns, design and lead English, Computing and Media activities for middle school children (ages 12-15) which build critical thinking skills as well as other important life and learning skills • To assist the Director of Programming and other interns in planning community events to showcase student work and celebrate cultural events such as Day of the Dead Qualifications Required: • Be at least 21 years of age, or hold a university or college degree • Have some experience teaching or working with children • Cross-cultural experience • Functionally bilingual – comfortable communicating in both Spanish and English

Interns will build cross-cultural and Spanish-language skills as well as gain experience in teaching and curriculum development.
Setting Description:
The internship program is based in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, an UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the state of Guanajuato.
Cost:
This is an unpaid internship. The organization will provide all interns with a cell-phone plan and cover transportation costs to and from the communities we work in. Interns are responsible for their own flight, food, and housing costs.
